Part of you with me
I like hearing the stories behind songs…
So I thought in anticipation of the release of our upcoming album ‘In My Garden’ I would share some of the stories from the songs of the album. First up I’m going to share a little about my song ‘Part of you with me’. It’s super special to me. We managed to record it remotely together with my dear friend Erin who now lives in Bend, Oregon. Being able to continue to make music together with Erin despite living so far apart has helped ease the feelings of loss that has been very tough to move through.
Both Sam and I have felt the ache of missing our friends and family in other parts of the world over the last few years.
Being separated right now is tough.
Though we have eased some of the aches by regular online chats and daydreaming about what we’ll do when the borders reopen and it’s safe to travel again the ache of not being able to be together physically is hard to bare.
We are missing so much..
Something that helps me to process how i’m feeling is songwriting. I wrote the song ‘Part of you with me’ to speak to these hard feelings. Because though we are separated physically it is helpful to think about the depth of our connections and know that when we meet again all that time will fall away and oh how good it will feel.
I daydream about that moment…
Sometimes I’m walking through the arrivals gate at San Fransisco airport and I can see my brother waiting for me…
Sometimes I imagine that my best friend Erin is back and she’s walking up the path to our house where we will talk about EVERYTHING over a cup of tea together, sing together, laugh together…
I imagine playing with my nieces and nephews, hugging them, playing with them. Watching them and my boys just hanging out…
and then I cry…
I think about all the people that are missing people they love right now. Even though it is sad it is kind of beautiful too.
When we are apart from people we love we experience the gift of being acutely aware and present to the feelings of love we have for them.
This song is a place for you to sit with that feeling and if it helps you I will feel glad for it.
